Fair Labor Procurement Policies
Many Catholic
institutions recognize the influence that their purchases have on
society and the market, so they adopt fair labor policies governing
their procurement of goods and services. This might require vendors to
utilize union labor, pay a living wage or certify that imported goods
are not produced in sweatshops.
University Garments
The following Catholic
colleges and universities are reported as members of the Workers’
Rights Consortium, which inspects and certifies fair labor practices by
vendors of college logo goods and garments:
·
Aquinas College
· Bellarmine University
· Boston College
· The College of the Holy Cross
· Duquesne University
· Fordham University
· Georgeotwn University
· Gonzaga University

Catholic
Institutions in Labor Disputes
Resurrection
Health Care,
Chicago IL. For years nurses at Resurrection Health Systems in Chicago IL have
engaged in
union organizing activities. At the end of June workers participated in a
certification
election under the NLRB with a majority choosing 'no union', but the
American
Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) charged
that the
results were tainted by employer coercion and have filed unfair labor
practice
charges. The charges are being investigated by the National Labor
Relations
Board.
Manhattan
College, New York NY
and St. Xavier University, Chicago IL. Adjunct faculty at both
schools are
seeking to organize, but both schools are seeking a ruling from the US
NLRB
exempting them from National Labor Relations Act coverage. Both schools
are
arguing that if they choose not to recognize and bargain with
representatives
of their employees, the NLRB cannot order them to do so because they
are
religious institutions. In other words, these colleges argue
that they
are TOO Catholic to be subject to the Labor Board but NOT Catholic
ENOUGH to
honor Catholic social teaching!
Our
Lady of Lourdes and
John S. Burke HS, New York, NY. When the Archdiocese
of New
York restructured and made the 10 High Schools of the Catholic High
School
Association independent, the administration of these two schools
dismissed a
number of well regarded teachers who were active in The Lay Faculty
Association
Local 255 (LIUNA) in what appears to be an attempt to bust the union.
The union
has filed Unfair Labor Practice charges; hearings are underway at the
New York
Public Employee Representation Board (PERB). For details, see this account of the dispute by LFA 255 leader Charles
Chesnavage.
